Dor Skinkard's new novel For The Love of Patrick is a welcome addition to the family saga genre, and more particularly to its Australian subcategory - think Eleanor Dark, Bryce Courtney, Colleen McCullough as some of the stars in this part of the firmament. Slinkard's book is faithful to the conventions, with its sound historical research, strong female characters, exotic locations, and a tale that weaves its way through the generations. As a bonus there are lots of horses! Australian fans of the genre will especially enjoy the scenes from the charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba.
I was lucky enough to be one of the early readers of this work, and was immediately captivated. It's an interesting story covering the life of a man from birth, his family, and the many fascinating characters who come into contact with his charm, and his many escapades. I don't think I have read an Australian author who brings so much to their work, in terms of authenticity, charm, quirky humour, capturing the Australian essence of the various knockabout characters early in the history of Australia and during the escapades of the Australian Light Horse in Egypt. I can't describe how much I enjoyed the work, and keenly anticipate Patrick 2, which I gather is ready, and Patrick 3, which is 'in progress'. Dor, you have created a lovable character here, really you have, well done! This work will appeal to any reader who enjoys Australiana, outback, family sagas.
